Research from the University of Kentucky shows that bluebirds will readily utilize a slot entry, while sparrows prefer a round hole. The 5.25" long and 1.25" high entry on this shelter perfectly meets these needs, and a generous, overhanging roof protects the interior from precipitation. Use the included, 1.5" thick, pine block at the base of the home to decrease its depth, as this same research shows that bluebirds will still populate the box, while sparrows seek out a deeper nest. Angled corners just below the roof keep this home well ventilated and assist in regulating its internal temperature, aided by the 0.75" thick, all pine construction. Pull the front panel of this home upward for nest checks and to add the wooden block for less depth if needed. A metal latch keeps the home securely closed, and the rough interior of the item helps nestlings grip it and climb out. The pine panels come together to formulate a superior, trusty nest box, and this staunch unit will offer many seasons of service to these charming songbirds. Over time and with exposure to the elements, the natural tone of this lovely item will weather to a charming gray for a dynamic and arresting look. Use the attached, back hanger to situate this convenient home against a wall or post, or pole mount it with a mounting bracket (not included).
